Three Different Ways to Sharpen a Knife without a Sharpener

Being prepared means having access to a reliable personal blade. This blade usually comes in the form of a sturdy knife that is constantly near a person who should be using it. But, as all those who are interested in preparedness already know, knives tend to dull after use. For many procedures, it is essential not to have a dull blade that can end up being almost useless. Instead, the edge of the same knife should be always kept sharp and ready for action. Yet, often people find themselves without access to a sharpener but still with the need to get their blade’s edge in proper working condition once more. Here are several ideas on how anyone can sharpen their knives or any other blade without the use of specialized sharpener tools.

Using Ceramic Object

Ceramics are mostly used in the kitchen as mugs, plates, and many more regular household items. For most, they are brittle and easily breakable, which is not untrue, but ceramic things also have other properties. One of them is their hardness. This is why any piece of ceramic that has a rough part, like the bottom surface of a mug, can be used for sharpening a knife. In fact, ceramic objects work great as the fine stone that is otherwise used to define a blade’s sharpness. To sharpen a knife with ceramic, the person should flip the same object (the bottom sides are usually uncovered by paint or some other process) and slowly drag their blade over the ceramic. This should be repeated for three times, after which the blade should be turned to its other side and process repeated.

Using Steel Sides of Items

Steel is naturally tough and it is no wonder it can be applied to creating a sharp edge of a knife. Virtually any piece will do, even though many chose to use the backside of any other blade they own. Basically, as long as the steel of the knife used for sharpening is harder than the steel of the other knife, the same process should be completed with full success. The sharpening process should use one side of the blade and then switch to the other side. Here, the important thing is to remain composed and focused while doing this, otherwise, a person might end up injured if one of their knives slips during this period.

Using Concrete Surfaces

Concrete might seem like a weird choice for sharpening a tool, but the truth is that many use exactly this to attain incredible results. The only thing that has to be kept in mind is the need to make the concrete as uniform as possible. If it is not the process of sharpening will just damage the blade and provide uneven results. However, with a solid and compact piece of concrete, any blade can be sharpened to incredible precision. When sharpening using concrete, the person should hold the knife by its base and gently pull it across a concrete surface. The path of the same pull should be a couple of inches long, after which the other side of the blade should be treated. This process might ask for some time, but the result will be a high level of sharpness.

Using either one of these tips on how to sharpen a knife without a sharpener means that anyone can easily improvise a means to keep their blade in great shape.
