6 Ways To Catch Fish Without a Rod

fish

Although most people have gone fishing using a traditional fishing rod, this tool may not always be available. If you’re in a situation where you don’t have your fishing gear, you can still catch fish. These are 6 different ways to catch a fish without a rod.

Hand Fishing

Hand fishing is fairly easy in an area that has shallow water and overbank areas or logs. You’re going to find catfish in these areas. Start by keeping your hand in the water until it reaches the same temperature of the water. Reach under the log or bank area and try to catch any fish that are swimming there. Some people wear gloves which may be a good idea for larger fish.

Can Fishing

If you don’t have a rod, but you do have a hook and line, you can improvise your own fishing rig. Most people use a can and anything that you can wrap the line around easily will work. The concept here is the same as a spinning reel. Tie the line around the can, making sure that it’s at least a few feet long. Add the hook and bait onto the other end. Cast with one hand while the other holds the can and then pull the line in by wrapping it around the can.

Fishing Net

If you have the time, you can make a net or use netting that’s available. Many people will also use improvised nets made from clothes or blankets stretched between two sticks. Place in shallow water and scare the fish in the direction of the net. Once they reach the net, lift the net and see what you’ve caught. Keep in mind that this method is best for catching multiple smaller fish rather than larger ones.

Setting Poles

This fishing method is good if you don’t have time to fish and want to try overnight fishing. Either tie one end of a line to an overhanging branch of a deep pool or cut down a sapling and drive it into the bank of a river so it angles over the water. Add a hook and sinker to the other end of the line and bait preferably with a small fish. Set the poles right before dark and then come back first thing in the morning. This is a good way to catch larger fish that tend to swim in bigger pools.

Spear Fishing

This fishing method requires a fair amount of skill and can only be done on larger fish. While you can purchase a professional grade fishing spear, you can also make your own. Sharpen a slender piece of wood to a fine point, cutting jagged edges to spear the fish. The best time to spear fish is at night with a light. You’ll have to practice and be patient with this method.

Fish traps

There are many different types of primitive fish traps that can be built using only natural materials found in the wild. One of the most ancient type of primitive fish traps is the fishing basket, this method is so old even the ancient Egyptians used weir baskets made from willow branches to get fish from the Nile river.

Fishing without a fishing rod may seem like a challenge but there are multiple options to catch fish without having to use traditional equipment. If you’re in a pinch, use one or more of these methods.
